What are the common transmission issues with the 2007 acadia slt 2 and is it expensive to maintain?

I found a very neat Nigerian used 2007 acadia slt 2 for sale at a tempting price. It is a massive 7 seater SUV which is perfect for my large family. However my mechanic strictly warned me against buying any GMC Acadia from that generation claiming they have notorious transmission failure rates. Is this a confirmed factory defect for the 2007 model? If the transmission fails how much does a replacement gearbox cost in the Nigerian spare parts market?

Your mechanic gave you brilliant and highly accurate advice regarding the 2007 acadia slt 2. The first generation GMC Acadia (2007 to 2009) is notorious globally for catastrophic transmission failures. The 6T75 6 speed automatic transmission was fundamentally flawed from the factory. The wave plate inside the transmission is prone to shattering after about 80,000 miles. When this metal wave plate breaks metal shrapnel destroys the entire internal gearing making the car lose reverse gear or completely refuse to shift past second gear. Because of this massive factory defect the resale value of the 2007 Acadia is terribly low which is why the price seems so tempting. It is a massive luxurious family hauler but it is a ticking financial time bomb.

If you ignore the warnings and the transmission on the 2007 acadia slt 2 fails the repair costs in Nigeria are astronomical. Replacing the transmission with a fairly used (tokunbo) unit from Ladipo market will cost you between 600,000 and 900,000 Naira excluding the mechanic workmanship. Furthermore dropping the transmission on an Acadia requires the mechanic to drop the entire front subframe and engine out of the bottom of the car which requires specialized lifting equipment. Beyond the transmission this model suffers from power steering pump failures and timing chain stretching. If you absolutely need a large 7 seater SUV stick to the Toyota Highlander or the Honda Pilot. The Acadia will bankrupt you with maintenance costs in Nigeria.

I owned a 2008 Acadia. It was the worst financial mistake of my life. The transmission failed exactly as described while I was driving on the Third Mainland Bridge. I spent almost a million Naira fixing it and sold it immediately.

It is a very beautiful and spacious SUV the leather seats are incredibly comfortable but the electronics and gear issues are just too much. Listen to your mechanic he is trying to save your wallet.

If you find an Acadia where the owner has already replaced the factory transmission with a newer upgraded unit from a 2012 model it might be safe to buy. But you have to verify this with physical receipts which is rare.
