Is it still a smart decision to buy a 32 inches plasma tv instead of an LED TV today?

I am setting up a small barbershop and I need a very cheap television to keep customers entertained with football highlights and music videos. I saw a vendor in Alaba market selling a fairly used 32 inches plasma tv for a much lower price than the modern LED televisions. However I have heard that plasma screens consume a terrifying amount of electricity and fade over time. For a small business running on a prepaid electricity meter and a small generator is buying a 32 inches plasma tv a terrible financial mistake in the long run?

Buying a 32 inches plasma tv today for a small business is a terrible financial and technical mistake. Plasma technology is completely obsolete; global manufacturers abandoned it over a decade ago. The unit you saw in Alaba is highly likely a refurbished dinosaur that is well over 12 years old. The biggest issue for a barbershop is power consumption. A 32 inch plasma television consumes between 200 and 300 watts of electricity constantly because it literally ignites gases in tiny cells to produce light. It runs extremely hot. On a prepaid meter this TV will aggressively drain your tokens. More importantly if there is a power outage your small 1.5 KVA "I pass my neighbor" generator will struggle massively to power a plasma TV alongside your hair clippers and fans.

In contrast to the outdated 32 inches plasma tv a modern 32 inch LED TV is vastly superior for your specific use case. A modern LED TV consumes only about 40 to 60 watts of power. You can easily run it on a tiny solar inverter or a very small petrol generator without any stress. LED TVs run completely cool and are incredibly lightweight making them safe to mount on a thin barbershop wall. While plasma TVs originally offered better black levels for dark movie scenes you are playing football highlights and music videos in a brightly lit shop where LED brightness easily wins. Brands like Hisense TCL or even budget brands like UKA offer brand new 32 inch LED TVs with a warranty for under 100,000 Naira. Do not buy the plasma.

I made this exact mistake. I bought a used plasma TV because it was very cheap. It was so heavy it almost pulled the wall mount out of the concrete and it drained my prepaid meter like a pressing iron.

Plasma TVs are obsolete for a reason. If the screen goes bad or a board burns inside you will not find replacement parts anywhere in Nigeria because they stopped making them years ago. Throwing your money away.

Just buy a brand new 32 inch Hisense LED TV. It consumes almost zero power the picture is razor sharp and it comes with a solid warranty. It is the perfect TV for a barbershop.
