Are the invisible trackpad and touch function keys on the dell xps 14 9440 actually comfortable to use?
I am completely fascinated by the futuristic design of the new dell xps 14 9440. The seamless glass palm rest with the invisible trackpad and the light up touch function keys look amazing in videos. For those who actually own or use this laptop daily is this design practical for fast typing and coding or is it just a frustrating ergonomic nightmare?

3 days agoThe futuristic design of the new dell xps 14 9440 is undoubtedly visually stunning but it presents severe ergonomic challenges for intensive professional use. The seamless glass palm rest completely hides the borders of the haptic trackpad. While it looks incredibly clean finding the edges of the trackpad purely by muscle memory is frustrating. You will frequently find yourself swiping your finger on the glass slightly outside the active trackpad zone resulting in zero cursor movement. The haptic feedback (which simulates a click using vibration motors instead of a physical diving board mechanism) is actually brilliant and feels just like an Apple MacBook but the lack of physical borders is a definite learning curve.

3 days agoThe capacitive touch function row on the dell xps 14 9440 is heavily criticized by coders and power users. Instead of physical F1 to F12 keys Dell replaced them with illuminated touch sensitive icons on a glass strip. For a programmer who relies heavily on the Escape key or function keys for debugging the lack of tactile feedback is a nightmare. You cannot rest your finger on the key or feel if you have successfully pressed it without looking down breaking your typing flow. While the zero lattice keyboard (the keys sit flush against each other with no gaps) is surprisingly comfortable to type on the touch function row makes this laptop a very hard sell for serious software developers. It is a laptop built for executive aesthetics not hardcore coding utility.

3 days agoI played with it at a showroom. It is the most beautiful Windows laptop ever made hands down. It feels like a solid block of aluminum. But the touch escape key drove me crazy in just 10 minutes.

3 days agoIf you are just a manager writing emails and doing video calls it is perfect. But if you are a programmer writing code for 8 hours a day do not buy it. You need physical function keys for your sanity.

3 days agoThe seamless glass palm rest is a massive fingerprint magnet. If your hands sweat slightly in the Nigerian heat the laptop looks very dirty and smudged within an hour. You have to carry a microfiber cloth everywhere.
