How can I program a replacement dstv remote to also control my television volume?
My children finally destroyed the original remote for our Explora decoder. I bought a new replacement dstv remote from the market. I know the original remote had a feature where you could program it to control the volume and power of the actual TV so you do not need two remotes on the couch. How exactly do I program the new remote to pair with a standard LG or Samsung television?

3 days agoProgramming your replacement dstv remote to control your television volume and power is a fantastic feature that saves you from juggling multiple remotes. The most common Explora remotes (the A7 or B6 models) have a built in learning capability. To pair it with your TV ensure both the decoder and the TV are turned on. Press and hold the "TV Power" button and the "Shift" (or ARC) button on the DSTV remote simultaneously for about 3 seconds until the amber light at the top of the remote blinks twice and stays on. This indicates the remote has entered learning mode. Then enter the specific 5 digit programming code for your TV brand. For example Samsung is usually 24484 and LG is 16284. If successful the amber light will blink three times.

3 days agoIf entering the specific brand code does not work there is an automatic search method for the dstv remote. Enter learning mode as described above but instead of a code type "9 9 1". Then slowly press the "TV Power" button repeatedly pointing it at your television. The remote is cycling through thousands of codes internally. The moment your TV turns off stop pressing the button immediately! Press the "OK" button to lock that code in. Now your DSTV remote volume buttons will control the TV volume directly. IMPORTANT NOTE: This programming feature ONLY works if you bought a genuine original replacement remote. The cheap 1,500 Naira counterfeit remotes sold in traffic lack the internal learning microchip and cannot be programmed to control your TV.

3 days agoI finally programmed mine to my LG TV using the code method. It is so liberating to hide the LG remote in a drawer and just use the DSTV remote for everything. Thanks for the detailed steps!

3 days agoThe fake remotes are the absolute worst. I spent two hours trying to program a fake remote before realizing it simply did not have the hardware to learn TV codes. Always buy the original one from the Multichoice office.

3 days agoIf the code method fails you can also use the "copy" method where you point the TV remote directly at the DSTV remote and press the volume buttons to transfer the infrared signal. Check the manual inside the remote box for the exact buttons to press.
