Does the magnetic keyboard on the hp elite x2 g4 tablet detach easily and is it comfortable?

I travel frequently for corporate meetings and I am tired of carrying a heavy traditional laptop. The hp elite x2 g4 looks like the perfect alternative to the Microsoft Surface Pro offering a tablet screen with a detachable keyboard. However my biggest fear with 2 in 1 devices is the typing experience. Does the detachable keyboard on the hp elite x2 g4 feel flimsy and bouncy when typing fast on your lap? Does the magnetic connection fail over time causing the keyboard to disconnect randomly while you are working?

The hp elite x2 g4 is HPs premium corporate answer to the Microsoft Surface Pro and it executes the 2 in 1 design brilliantly. The detachable keyboard is highly engineered. It connects using incredibly strong neodymium magnets and physical alignment pins. The magnetic pull is so aggressive that the keyboard literally snaps itself into place the moment you bring it close to the tablet. Once connected the connection is rock solid. It will not disconnect randomly while you are typing or shifting the device on your desk. The communication between the keyboard and the tablet relies on gold pogo pins which are highly durable and do not suffer from the input lag associated with Bluetooth keyboards.

However your concern about using the hp elite x2 g4 on your lap is the fundamental flaw of all 2 in 1 devices. The typing experience on a solid flat desk is fantastic; the keys are backlit clicky and have a surprising amount of travel depth. But because the keyboard is essentially a rigid leather folio and the screen relies on a metal kickstand for support it is practically impossible to type comfortably on your lap. If you cross your legs or sit on an uneven couch the kickstand will dig into your thighs and the keyboard will bounce and flex annoyingly as you type. It is a brilliant lightweight machine for tray tables on airplanes or corporate desks but a terrible machine for lap typing.

I ditched my heavy laptop for the Elite X2 G4 last year. It is so liberating to just detach the screen and read PDF reports like a magazine while lying on the couch. The screen resolution is gorgeously sharp.

Lapability is definitely zero. I tried typing an email while sitting in the back of an Uber and the kickstand kept slipping off my knees causing the tablet to almost fall. You absolutely need a flat table to use it properly as a laptop.

Make sure you buy the official HP Active Pen to go with it. Signing digital PDF documents or drawing flowcharts directly on the screen during a Zoom presentation makes you look incredibly professional.
