How reliable is the MTN hynet flex router during heavy rain and cloudy weather?
I am considering dropping my expensive fiber optic subscription and switching to the MTN hynet flex router for my home office in Lagos. Fiber cables cut frequently but I am worried about wireless 4G/5G signals. Does the massive MTN hynetflex actually maintain strong internet speeds during heavy thunderstorms or does the network completely vanish like DSTV signals do when it rains heavily?

2 days agoThe MTN hynet flex router (specifically the massive white ZTE or Huawei models) is arguably the most powerful wireless 4G/5G router available to consumers in Nigeria. Your concern about weather interference is a common misconception inherited from satellite TV technology. DSTV signals vanish during heavy rain because satellite signals travel from outer space and the thick water droplets in rain clouds physically absorb and scatter the high frequency Ku band microwaves (rain fade). Cellular 4G and 5G signals operate on completely different much lower radio frequencies that travel from terrestrial cell towers just a few kilometers away. These lower frequencies easily penetrate heavy rain clouds and thunderstorms without being completely absorbed.

2 days agoTherefore during heavy Lagos thunderstorms your MTN hynet flex router will absolutely NOT lose its signal completely like a DSTV dish. It will maintain a very strong connection to the cell tower. However you might experience a slight drop in actual internet speed during a storm. This is not because the rain is blocking your router signal; it is because heavy rain frequently causes localized power outages (NEPA tripping) in the area. When the power goes out the local MTN cell tower switches to its backup generator or batteries which sometimes forces the tower to drop into a lower power state or limits bandwidth to conserve energy. The router itself is incredibly robust features massive internal antennas and will easily outshine any mobile phone hotspot during bad weather.

2 days agoI switched from fiber to the Hynet Flex. During the massive August rains my internet did not drop a single bar. The only issue is if the MTN mast on your street loses generator power then the whole area goes dark.

2 days agoMake sure you position the router near a window facing the nearest MTN mast. Even though it is powerful thick concrete walls combined with heavy rain can slightly reduce the signal quality and increase your ping during Zoom calls.

2 days agoThe built in battery on the Hynet Flex is a lifesaver. When the heavy rain inevitably causes NEPA to take the light the router just switches to battery power instantly and your internet never drops. It lasts about 3 hours.
