Is an inverter with built in battery safe to keep inside a small unventilated bedroom?

I want to buy a portable solar power station for my room specifically an inverter with built in battery (like the lithium ion models). I live in a very small apartment with poor ventilation. Are these all in one lithium inverter with built-in battery units safe to keep next to my bed while sleeping or is there a severe risk of toxic battery fumes or fire hazards if the unit overheats during charging?

Using an inverter with built in battery (specifically modern Lithium ion or LiFePO4 portable power stations) inside a small unventilated bedroom is generally very safe provided you buy a reputable brand like EcoFlow Bluetti or massive generic Lithium packs. Unlike traditional heavy deep cycle lead acid or tubular batteries (which violently release highly toxic and explosive hydrogen gas while charging and MUST be kept outside or in highly ventilated areas) lithium batteries are completely sealed. They do not emit any toxic fumes or gases during their normal charging and discharging cycles. You can comfortably sleep right next to a lithium power station without any respiratory dangers.

However the real danger of an inverter with built in battery in an unventilated room is severe thermal runaway leading to a fire hazard. While they do not emit gas these units generate a significant amount of heat during rapid charging from the grid or when powering heavy appliances like an AC or microwave. If you push the inverter to its maximum load limit the internal cooling fans will spin aggressively to dissipate heat. If your room is extremely hot unventilated and you block the cooling vents by pushing the unit tight against a wall or hiding it under a bed the internal lithium cells can overheat. Extreme overheating can cause lithium cells to catch fire which is catastrophic. Always leave at least two feet of open space around the cooling vents of the inverter.

I keep a 1KVA lithium power station right next to my reading table in my small room. It makes zero noise and emits zero smells. It is a million times better than dealing with those massive acid batteries that ruin your floor.

Make sure you buy a LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery inverter not just standard Lithium ion. LiFePO4 chemistry is chemically stable and practically fireproof even if it overheats. It is the absolute safest technology for indoor use.

The internal fans can be quite loud when it is charging from NEPA. If you are a light sleeper the fan noise might annoy you at night but it is completely harmless.
