Is the budget itel a16 plus a durable smartphone for a commercial dispatch rider?

I am setting up a small logistics business and I need to buy four very cheap Android phones for my motorcycle dispatch riders to use Google Maps and WhatsApp. The itel a16 plus is one of the cheapest smartphones available. Is this device durable enough for outdoor commercial use? More importantly does it have enough RAM to run Google Maps navigation without freezing and crashing constantly in the middle of a delivery?

Using the itel a16 plus for a commercial motorcycle dispatch business requires managing extreme expectations. This device is an ultra budget entry level smartphone. Its primary advantage is that it is incredibly cheap (often found for under 30,000 Naira used or clearance) and features a small rugged plastic body that can take a beating. However internally it is severely crippled. It typically features a mere 1GB of RAM and a very weak processor. It runs on Android Go Edition which is a stripped down lightweight version of Android designed specifically for extremely low end hardware. It will handle basic phone calls SMS and the lightweight version of WhatsApp perfectly fine.

To answer your most critical question regarding Google Maps: The itel a16 plus will struggle agonizingly as a dedicated GPS navigation device. Google Maps is an incredibly resource heavy application. It requires constant GPS satellite polling internet data downloading and active screen rendering. With only 1GB of RAM the phone will overheat rapidly under the hot sun on a motorcycle mount. When the phone overheats the processor will throttle severely causing Google Maps to freeze completely or the app will simply crash and close in the middle of a delivery route leaving your rider lost. Furthermore the battery capacity is very small meaning active GPS will kill the battery in less than two hours. It is too weak for commercial logistics work.

I bought three Itel phones for my riders to save money. It was a massive mistake. The phones kept freezing and the riders missed deliveries because the map would not load. I had to replace them with Samsung A series phones.

Itel is strictly a phone for making calls and checking WhatsApp occasionally. Do not try to run heavy business applications on it. The 1GB RAM is just too small for modern apps.

The screen is also very dim. When the rider is outside in the bright afternoon sun they will not be able to see the map clearly because the screen lacks high brightness levels. Spend a bit more and buy a better phone for your business.
