What is the wholesale price for a bag of dry ponmo / dried ponmo in Lagos markets?

I am researching the food export business and I want to start exporting local ingredients to the UK. What is the current wholesale price for a massive bag of export quality dry ponmo / dried ponmo (cow skin) in major Lagos markets like Oyingbo or Mile 12? Are there specific drying methods required to ensure it passes international customs without being seized for mold?

The export market for authentic dry ponmo / dried ponmo is incredibly lucrative because the Nigerian diaspora in the UK and USA constantly crave local delicacies but face strict agricultural import bans. Dried cow skin is perfectly legal to export if processed correctly. The wholesale price for a massive 50kg bag of premium export quality dry ponmo in major hubs like Mile 12 or Oyingbo market currently ranges between 80,000 and 120,000 Naira. The price varies based on the thickness of the skin (the thick Ijebu ponmo commands a massive premium over the thin white variety) and how thoroughly it has been dried.

To successfully export dry ponmo / dried ponmo to the UK without border customs seizing and incinerating your cargo your drying methodology must be flawless. You CANNOT export sun dried ponmo. Sun drying leaves a tiny percentage of core moisture which inevitably breeds green mold during the long weeks of transit in a dark shipping container. You must source oven dried or industrially dehydrated ponmo. It must be bone dry brittle and snap cleanly like a biscuit. Furthermore customs agents hate the strong smell of smoked goods. Ensure your supplier washes the ponmo rigorously to remove all sand and soot before the dehydration process. Vacuum sealing the dried pieces in transparent heavy duty plastic bags dramatically increases the shelf life and makes customs inspection extremely easy.

I export ponmo to Texas. The biggest mistake beginners make is buying cheap sandy ponmo. If the UK customs officers see sand or dirt in the bag they will flag it as an agricultural hazard and destroy your entire shipment. Cleanliness is everything.

Ijebu ponmo is the gold standard for export. It is incredibly thick and swells up massively when soaked in hot water. Diaspora buyers will gladly pay double the price for authentic thick Ijebu ponmo compared to the thin paper like ones.

Buy a small vacuum sealer machine. Vacuum sealing removes all the oxygen from the bag meaning mold literally cannot grow even if there is a tiny bit of moisture left inside. It makes your product look highly professional in foreign supermarkets.
